Contractors beware- Fire Doors must comply.

Contractors beware.
The days of fitting any old door thinking the client won't know are numbered. The requirement for Fire Doors mean that they must conform to testing standards eg BS EN 1634 Part 1 or BS 476 Part 22.
Remember the door frame and ironmongry (hinges etc) must comply also. An intumescent strip and cold smoke seal should be found preferrably in the door frame or in the door itself.

A step in the right direction

FIA Register with fairly stringent requirements. This is required to flush out the incompetent.

£13,000 fine for Fire Safety offences.

Another whacking fine for Fire Safety breaches. When will they ever learn. Apologies to P, P & M

Summary of Findings from Rosepark Inquirey

Many Care Home owners must be sitting with their fingers and legs crossed. with a "There but for the grace of God go I." attitude.

At the time of this fire, Care Homes were in the main, often as described in this summary.

Guidance given at the time from F & RS was to check before calling 999 to stop turn outs to false alarms.

I can assure anyone reading this, that the Homes in the Balmer Group are now as safe as you will find any Care Home. I, or my close family would be happy to reside in any of their Homes.

Thoughts on not attending fire signals.

Thoughts on Hampshire F & RS's decision not to attend AFD signals without a 999 call.

Ignoring an AFD signal and awaiting back up from 999 calls are fraught with danger. If there is a fire in the buildinig, the time taken to ascertain this fact by persons seeing flames/smoke issuing from the building could be the difference between being successful or not in saving that property.

From a Life Safety perspective; it is a known fact that some F&RS's gave/give advice to physically check before dialing 999.

This was done at Rosepark Care Home and 14 elderly residents lost their lives. The Inquest Summery will highlight this failing and it should never happen again.

Dial 999 every time the fire alarm actuates. If it is discovered that it is a false alarm, another call can be made leaving just 1 Fire Tender to attend.

Ignoring AFD signals is a disaster waiting to happen. What is the actual cost benifit in doing this compared to the potential property and life loss?

I hope I don't have to come back on here and say "I told you so."

Emergency Fire Action Plan worked getting 200 out of Club..

A good example of having a robust EFAP where all persons in the Building were able to leave safely before their tenability levels had been breached.
